Monster illustrations

One of my favorite hobbies is making digital illustrations of monsters. To form shapes and colors into one cohesive piece. The one thing I aim to do is to make these illustrations come to life. With many of these, there are a few major challenges. The first one is that there are no limitations, meaning there is no real starting point. As well, the structure and details take a long time to bring together in a cohesive way.

So how do I get started? A lot of the time, I don’t sketch on paper; I go straight to the computer, building each part of the illustration with shapes like they are Legos, which is how the process usually goes. Relating to real photos of real things, like human anatomy, helps me get a base start. Similar to clay, I mold my design, build the shapes, and go into detail afterwards.

In my mind, these illustrations can never be fully finished; they all have different levels of detail, and it goes to show how microscopic details can go. Ultimately these illustrations allow me to adapt my style depending on concept or context of other projects.
